WHUFC vs Arsenal

This is never a pretty fixture for West Ham and we went into this one not exactly setting the world on fire. But we had won our SF in the LC and they had lost theirs. Could lightning strike twice?

Rumours all morning that this was Avram’s last game irrespective of the result. No Scott Parker and Kovac in the team doesn;t make it a good start to the day. Also one of the John’s had lost his ticket the night before (long night apparently !). The day was not getting better.

So to the match. Long story short we did not turn up, and Wayne Bridge could be our most expensive mistake yet (which in itself is quite impressive). I hope further matches will improve performances.

If Avram is to go, then it has to happen before Everton away. If not come out and let us know. Because its starting to look a bit like a death from a thousand paper cuts, and its is also a little bit painful for everyone i think.

Will Martin O’Neill come, probably not if our spending is anything to go by. But its a funny old game and all that !!

WHUFC vs Birmingham City, 1st Leg LCSF

Keep right onto the end of the road, the BCFC anthem goes and thats what WHUFC managed to do last night, in an interesting match last night at the Boleyn. After a reasonable start and a Mark Noble goal from a near impossible angle, West Ham fell to pieces for the next 5 minutes and did their best to get BCFC back on level terms.

But they did hold out for half time and to be fair were good for the score.

THEN the second half. What the hell does Uncle Avram tell these guys are half time. There was no way in the world were we going to be good enough to soak up that pressure for any length of time. We were struggling to string 3 passes together for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Then up pops Liam Ridgewell (another WHUFC academy product) and we are at 1-1.

We still donk about the pitch, giving the ball away, and struggle to get any momentum, then , for no discernable reason Mr V Obima decides to display his MMA skills and we are down the 10 men, and looking like we are going to be on the wrong end of a hiding.

So AV leaves it 5 minutes too long and then makes 2 good subs, Carlton on for Freddie, and Zavrom Hines, for……………..Freddie (you know what i mean !).

So now i’m assuming CC holds it up and time wastes, and ZH keeps charging around to close up space which Big Vic should be covering. Final score 1-1 and we get away with it.

But no , that powerhouse of English Football Johnnie Spector makes a great run matched by a superlative cross, which is met head on by Carlton Cole, who…………………………………………………..

Scuffs it towards to Ben Foster, who for reasons best known to himself allows it through his legs and its 2-1 West Ham.

Even I felt for him as it was shown on the massive screen in his eyeline about 4 times !

Both teams were then knackered, WHU with charging about and Brum psychologically i think and the game petered out.

So will 2-1 be enough for the hammers in the return leg. Depends who turns up. 1st half hammrs, yes, second half no. Roll on the 15th Jan.

Other points of note, prior to the game there was Police vans flyong about everywhere, and during the second half, some charming looking chaps in riot helmets were placed in front of the away enclosure. Coincidence -no. Good luck anyone from west ham going up for away fixture, and wear a tin hat !

A good point was made on the radio as i drove home. The famous cliche about West Ham under lights, will disappear with moving the Olympic stadium. Interesting point i thought, as i have some fantastic memories over the years, and the thought that this may be coming to an end, is the first time i have questioned the move.

WHUFC Catch Up

ed to post after every match that i’ve seen (either telly or live), and thats worked out well hasn’t it. Eg one report and nothing. So i’ll catch up here and then move on. Maybe i’ll update monthly or only on important matters.

So BOxing day and away to Fulham, a ground we traditionally do well at, until 10 mins or so in, and we are 1 – 0 down. Typical rubbish defending. But not to be outdone we get to see Fulham do this twice, the first to Carlton from a missed clearence, and the second leaving Freddie completly unmarked at the back of the six yard box. A second from Carlton and its three points, thanks for coming.

Everton on the 28th, was a boring one one draw with pretty much no redeaming features.

The new year brings us Wolves at home on the first, and its always funny watching 30000+ hangovers in one place. Luckily enough, none were on the pitch in the claret and blue, as West Ham coasted to a 2-0 win, and (bloody hell) 15th place.

So far so good, but so far to Newcastle and a 5-0 thrashing with some defending from a Sunday morning U-8’s team. Back to the bottom, rock bottom.

An unmemorable disposal of Barnsley in FA3, and its upto date . Tonight sees the “biggest game at upton park for 20 years”, the LC SF 1st leg against Birmingham. I will be in attendance, and will report while its fresh. I promise.

Sheep to hack your pc?

This may be a little old now, but for normal users its worth knowing that if you use public wifi (eg that other people you don’t know use), then you could be in all sorts of bother if you also use facebook or twitter or for that matter any site that requires a login and delivers permanent cookies to the PC.

Top 10 technology picks for 2010

I been thinking about this for some time and have struggled getting it down to 10. But 10 it is, but they are in no order.  Some have been around prior to 2010, but have come into their own this year.

1. Ipad

No list for this year can be without the Ipad, whether i like it or not. Its an interesting struggle between a top technology idea and a reason for having one. Personally, i feel there are single use devices that are far better than what Apple are trying to acheive (see Kindle, below). But as a jack of all trades, it copes but has some wierd foibles that need sorting (eg one place for files, and not per app). The second one , as we all know will be some sort of fantastic, but lets wait for Feb to see.

2. Android.

This year the mighty google really flexed their muscle with the first decent releases of their phone OS, Android. 2,2 introduced a big increase in performance, and 2,3 Gingerbread increased this again. BUT, the app store needs to take a tip from Apple, and stop being the wildwest, and get more sensible. Also, to be sucessful does not mean allowing release of 100 different handsets every month. This really has the potential to be the number 1 in phone systems but if some people are 4 versions behind others, and have no idea when they will get updates, i’m sure market share will start to fall. So B+ for effort, E for application of business strategy.

3. Windows Phone

In order to complete the new world order of phone system trinity, i have to mention Microsoft’s re-entry into the phone market. This is the second one this year but less said about the Kin project the better (i’m surprised Balmer didn’t call it the f’kin project !).

Please don’t call it Windows 7 on the phone as every bloke in a phone shops wants to. ITS WINDOWS PHONE (SYSTEM 7). Microsoft marketing at its best – again.

What we get here is fantastic , as long as you already use (or don’t mind moving towards) the windows live suite of products and have an xbox.

Again the potential here is huge, but i’m not hearing big take up values. Every review is great, but if the marketplace is to explode with apps, the devs need to know there are going to be customers. Maybe when all those 3gs and nexus 1 contracts are up we may see some uptake. But if MS don;t get their way, i;m sure they will throw money at it. To be fair the system looks too good to fail, but you know what they said about the Titantic.

4. Hand held camcorders.

HHC’s have been about for eons, but this year they have caught up with the rest if the digital photography world and have become, pocket sized, HD, SDHC compatible, and most importantly, cheap. Great fun, and makes youtube a less out of focus place !

5. Kinect

A little biased as i got one on launch day, but this could be the tool to put MS back at the top of console wars. Once setup (a bit laborious) its worth its wait. Want to watch sky without a remote? Check. Want to have a VC on a decent sized screen? Check. OH yeah it plays games as well. We only have kinect adventures at the moment, and an unplayed active2. Reviews to come.

6. COD Black Ops

Nuff said. The biggest entertainment earner of 2009, does it again in 2010. Fair play to Treyarch, who were always the inferior partner to Infinity Ward in pulling this off. Now sort out some minor issues with lag. I’m getting fed up with getting 4 hit markers and then getting shot by 1 bullet 2 seconds afterwards. Where does this leave us with COD, bearing in mind the IW issues / lawsuits, etc, i don’t know, but i could play the final 3 (maybe 4) for ever.

7. 3D TV

Welcome to the 1950’s and the world of 3D. Welcome aboard Avatar, and ummmmmmmmmmm Avatar ! This is fedgling tech for sure, but needs to lose the glasses to become really mainstream. I nearly looked at one for christmas, but checked the Sky 3D listings and i had already seen……………………………..Avatar. Next year this will be in again i’m sure but without glasses, and with more content.

8. The Cloud

From Amazon wanting all your companies data held on the internet to Microsoft advertising “to the cloud” as a way of families watching videos from remote locations, everyone is caching in on the cloud. Web based storage has been around for ever, and so has remote hosting of servers, so can we drop the pretence about this being the next big thing and recognise it for what it is. However in the days of cheap online storage, whoever makes the killer app is onto some big profit. MS have had a go with office 365, but it suffers the same issue as google. NO PAGINATION. This is quite a bugbear for me so i’ll l eave it there.

9. Wikileaks

Was 2010 a good year or a bad year for Julian Assange? When does too much information become a bad thing, or is it a fuss about nothing. If nothing else this should keep IT security experts in jobs for a few years.

10. Kindle 3

Donly have one so i cannot review completely, but this looks a game changer. Free 3G, quick book downloads, small files, and of course the screen. No apple glossy reflective nonsense. Nearer holiday time i might get one, or do i go for the kindle client on the Itouch ??

So roll on 2011, what ya got ? More of the same i think, but just made easier. A bit like this year 🙂

Poker and Slots

I have been playing poker on and off for about 4 years now, and consider myself an avaerage player. I have also been a member of FullTilt’s iron man scheme for 10 months. This is bloody hard work for me (mainly play at least 1 hr a day for 15 or more days a month on rush poker 1/2), so i might retire from the IM after i get my end of year bonus.

Its difficult to treat a hobby like job (that pays less – but at least it pays).

In other news my wife and i have been treating ourselves to some slot play (foolish i know) that has reaped some fierce divdends over on paddypowercasino.com. One session over the weekend paid for both my new digital SLR and a new passport for the wife. Cheers paddy !

With my now soon to be trusty Nikon Digital SLR in my posession i’m sure i will be posting some xmas type snaps in the near future. I got into photography about 25 years ago, but need to re learn all my DOF’s and f stops again if am to get the best from this camera. But i still have an unused tripod from that era, so fittings allowing i have already saved a few bob.

WHUFC vs Man City

So yesterday  iwent to the Boleyn for the first time in over a month with the two Johns, and expected a good game. Although City were forth in the league i really didn’t rate them, and as the main man Carlos wasn’t playing i expected a draw at least.

I also expected to see West Ham team with some determination, and fight, as this could pull us away from the bottom of the table.

I got neither. Parker, Green and Tomkins were the only ones who made any sort of effort. It was one of the most gutless performances i have ever seen. If this continues, i can see my Season Ticket not being renewed for the first time in over 20 yrs.

In short not good enough. In Jan we need two centre backs and nother forward. We should also cash in on Cole and Faubet while we can still get some cash for them.

At least Mr abuse wasn’t in front of us today, so every cloud and that.

To be fair to City, De (a ?) Silva was very special and not only looks like Messi from a distance, he plays like him as well. So well done City, just don’t do it again

New Ipad

Ok, so i have an Itouch that my lovely wife bought me for xmas, but a little bit of me wanted an Ipad. I have now been using one for about a week, and i’m honestly glad i don’t have one.

So, Mr Jobs if you are listening, in the next version i demand:

Less weight (far too heavy to hold for a significant amount of time) + some nicely placed ridges / finger pads, on the back for extra comfort when holding as a book, etc.

Facetime and front facing camera. Portable VC on a decent screen !. Thanks for that.

USB, sdcard, anything slot. I know its a long shot but it is handy !

External display out, for any app. See post one !

Ideally, i would like MS office as well, but now i’m pushing the boat out.

And cheaper. Either compete with netbooks or don’t. Currently i can buy 2+ netbooks per pad, and currently they are more useful.

And while we are at it, can we have 3g onto the touch as well. I don’t need the phone, but always on internet would be useful.

Cheers Steve

Regards

Ben

IPad’s, Touch’s and “closed ecosystems”

So, this finds me finally putting words to “paper” and unleashing some of my useful and not so useful points of view onto the blogosphere.

Anyone who knows me personally knows I’m not Apples biggest fan, but times are a changing and I’m slowly coming round…………………

But if you are developing for this system, and everyone’s supposed to be equal, can you ensure that if you write an app for OS version x of Ipad, ensure that it does the same thing on version x for phones and touches as well, excepting obvious things like 3G, etc. This is just plain lazy and annoying.

I will not be naming names just yet, i’ve given (the paid for app) dev time to answer !

Also, why do i have to jailbreak to get display out from any app, on an IPad. Ludicrous !

IPad to external display
